Corporate Responsibility

A strong commitment to proactive corporate social and environmental responsibility is one of our core values. We have established a reputation as a global leader in this area and have been recognized as a model corporate citizen by promoting environmentally responsible technologies, care in our communities, energy conservation and upholding the highest standards of business conduct.

We care about the environment. Energy efficient buildings, comprehensive programs to minimize waste and energy consumption are a few of the ways we demonstrate our commitment to the environment every day.

We also strive to improve the communities in which we operate. Our people are encouraged to volunteer their time and we support charitable causes and projects that benefit education, health and the environment.

The Environment

At Husky, we have long been committed to minimizing the impact our business has on the environment with methods that are socially responsible, scientifically based and economically sound. Our buildings fit into the natural landscape and have highly efficient lighting, heating, cooling and insulation. We utilize the natural elements wherever possible. Some examples of this are day-lighting, ground cooling and solar energy. We recycle virtually every waste stream profitably and invest in products and technologies that support environmental sustainability.

Our environmental history

1980 – Husky’s Greenbook is published as a best-practices guide to help customers who are building new injection molding facilities in terms of factory planning, energy efficiency, machine set-up, etc., which represents the early formation of a services business.

1994 – The commitment that Robert Schad (Husky’s founder) has to environmental responsibility is extended to all areas of the company.

2000 – Launch of Greenshares, a company-wide program to encourage environmental responsibility among team members – at home and at work.

2004 – The opening of Husky’s Shanghai Technical Center, a state-of-the-art facility that uses 40% less energy than the average amount required for a building of its size.

Today – Husky’s TargetZERO program.

TargetZEROTM

TargetZERO is Husky’s 15-year program aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025, according to the baseline year of 2006, through:

  • Sustainability - reducing paper, energy and water consumption, finding alternate sources of energy, and using paper that is made with a minimum of 50% recycled fiber
  • Product development – improving the manufacturing process to make it more sustainable and helping Husky customers achieve maximum operating efficiency by streamlining processes and lowering energy consumption
  • Non-hazardous and hazardous waste management – tracking where our recycling goes, performing regular site audits to ensure our recyclables (plastics, cans, glass, paper, batteries, lighting, wood, metal and food waste) are being recycled properly and ensuring vendors are handling hazardous waste according to regulations
  • Environmental awareness and education – executing events and programs such as GreenShares, an environmental incentive program encouraging Husky team members to be proactive in conserving our natural resources – at work and at home
  • Reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions – evaluating, monitoring and then reducing GHG emissions through special projects and sustainable energy uses

Husky and ReNew

1. How do you feel about the ReNew program?

We were very excited to hear about the ReNew program since it perfectly aligned with our proactive approach to protecting the environment.  This program allowed us to increase our waste diversion rate by diverting  disposable absorbents and oil from hazardous waste landfills.

2. What benefits are you realizing from ReNew?

The environmental benefits are very important to us as we are continuously striving to reduce our environmental footprint.  We have been able to divert disposable absorbent pads from hazardous waste landfills and recycle oil.  We also have less administration and fees associated with hazardous waste disposal.

3. Are environmental issues important to Husky?

At Husky, we have long been committed to minimizing the impact our business has on the environment with methods that are socially responsible, scientifically based and economically sound.  TargetZERO is Husky’s 15-year program aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025, according to the baseline year of 2006, through sustainability, product development,  waste management, environmental awareness and education, and a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

4. Can you comment on the performance of the ReNew pads versus the old disposables? For example, do you find they take more abuse and offer higher performance?

We were drawn to the ReNew program because it offered an alternative to disposable absorbent pads.  The re-usable ReNew absorbent pads were more resilient, had greater absorption properties and were washable using a zero waste process.
